Profile ~ Barbara Gallagher Tonry, Connecticut - 2001

 

Barbara is the head coach of varsity gymnastics at Yale University, a position she has held for over 30 years.  Prior to her tenure at Yale, she taught and coached in the Hamden Public Schools.  During this time her teams won several state championships.

Her coaching career at Yale began in the early 1970’s.  Her teams at Yale have won eleven Ivy League titles as well as numerous ECAC championships.  Many of her athletes have won NCAA individual titles.

Barbara is currently affiliated with the Ivy League, ECAC, and NCAA Division I.  Her team record of 177-63 covers a thirty year time span with an average of eight competitions each year.  Championships won by her teams include: Ivy League championships for 25 years (1977-2001), AIAW Regional and National championships; ECAC championships, and NCAA championships.

She has been recognized for her achievements as a gymnastics coach by the NCAA – Northeast Regional Coach of the Year.  She has also been inducted into several halls of fame: Texas State Hall of Fame, National Tumbling & Trampoline Hall of Fame, the United States Gymnastics Hall of Fame, and most recently, the World Acrobatic Society Hall of Fame.

Barbara states: “I have been involved with teaching and coaching for over forty years.  Although I coach at a university that competes in Division I, we offer no scholarships.  The most rewarding part of coaching junior high school, senior high school and university students was not having anything (a scholarship) to hold over their heads.  All my team members were competing for the love of the sport and the joy of competition.”
