Profile ~ Susan Schwerdtle, Connecticut - 1999

 

Susan Schwerdtle is a physical education teacher at New Canaan High School, New Canaan, CT, a position she has held since 1969.  From 1969-1977 she was the girls’ softball coach and the outdoor track coach from 1978-1985.

Her league and board affiliations include the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Field Hockey Committee (Chair, 1989- present) from 1995 – present; the State All-State Selection Committee from 1993 – present; the All-State Dinner Committee from 1989 – present; and the League Board of Directors from 1981 – present.

Her lifetime field hockey record is 306-85-68.  Her teams have earned berths in the state tournament from its inception in 1974 to the present.  They were the State Champions in 1983 and 1997 and finalists in 1975, 1992, and 1996.  They reached the semifinals in 1979, 1989, 1994, 1995, and 1998.  They were League Champions in 1987, 1989, 1995, and 1997 and Division Champions in 1978, 1988, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998.

Honors, awards and citations presented to Susan include: induction into the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame, 1997, Coach of the Year in 1990, Field Hockey Coaches’ Association Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1995, and the State All-Star Game Coach in 1995 and 1998.  She received the NAGWS Pathfinder Award in 1999.
