Claire Robinson, Rhode Island – 2003

Claire has been teaching physical education and coaching for 38 years.  She has taught all levels (K-12) in the public schools and at URI for 23 years.  She retired from coaching in 1978 and retired from full time teaching in 1989.  From 1978-1989, she was the coordinator of student teaching.

Claire has coached softball at URI for 12 years and coached field hockey and volleyball there also.  She served as advisor to the URI Women’s Athletic Association.  For 13 years, she coached field hockey, basketball, and softball at White Plains, NY.  No records for her teams are available.

She is a member of the International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and women.  She was a member of the Rhode Island Field Hockey Association (chair 1968-1969), The Rhode Island Board of Women Officials, the AAHPERD Division of Girls and Women Sports, and as the chairperson of the Rhode Island Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Division for Girls and Women in sport.  While in New York, she was the chair of the Hudson Valley Division of Girls and women in Sport.

Claire is a National Honorary basketball official.  In 1988, she was presented the EDA Meritorious Service Award; in 1988, the Rhode Island Association for Health, Physical Education , Recreation, and Dance (RIAHPERD) Meritorious Service Award; in 1986, the RIAPHERD Presidential Citation; and was recognized by the American Heart Association in 1987.

During her career, Claire served as the Rhode Island State Coordinator of Jump Rope for Heart, as a clinician for the Lifetime Sports Foundation (badminton), a member of the Association of Women in Physical Education – NY (chairperson Southeast Zone), and a member of the New York Association for Health, Physical Education , Recreation, and Dance (executive board).
