Carol Ciotto, Connecticut – 2018
Carol Ciotto spent 23 years in public education as an elementary physical educator at Webster Hill and Wolcott Elementary School in West Hartford, CT, assistant principal at the Kennelly School in Hartford, CT, and principal at the Norris Elementary School in East Hartford, CT, before moving into teacher preparation at the collegiate level. As an elementary teacher she provided a variety of before and after school programs for students. She shared her passion and joy for athletics and physical activity by providing opportunities for girls in basketball, gymnastics, track & field, dance and cross-sport (a program that incorporates a mix of net and wall invasion games to provide opportunities for girls to select or try various areas of interest). She also coordinated the town wide elementary cross country and track & field events for 15 years.
Her coaching took her to Conard High School and Hall High School in West Hartford, and Berlin High School in Berlin, CT. Carol coached diving, field hockey, girls’ gymnastics, and girls’ track. Her awards are numerous, including: CIAC (Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference) Coach of the Year (1993) for gymnastics; National Hershey Corporation Track & Field Service Award (1993); CTAHPERD program award (1986 & 1987),Teacher of the Year (1998) and Honor Award (2017); International Conference on Education Speaker Award (2014); SHAPE America Teacher/Educator of the year (2016); and Central CT State University Excellence in teaching (2009, 2010, 2016, 2017) and Honor Award (2017).
Carol was inducted into the Bulkeley High School Athletic Hall of Fame in October, 2018. She still holds the BHS record in 1-meter diving – 20 years).
